About our Scoutmaster

Our Scoutmaster is Mr. H. Alan Schup, who was the second Scout in Troop 502 to earn the Eagle Scout rank.  Mr. Schup has been involved with scouting since 1968 when he joined Pack 456 of Longhorn Council.   Over the years he has dedicated himself to helping other scouts realize their potential and maximize their scouting experience. Following is Mr. Schup’s qualifications that have earned him the respect of Troop 502 and other scouts young and old.  We feel it is important for parents to know the qualifications of the Scoutmaster as he is the guiding hand for your scout's development. 

As a youth, Mr. Schup earned the Arrow of Light, Eagle Scout, and was awarded the Nishkin Service Award and Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow. Mr. Schup has been Scoutmaster of Troop 502 since 1996. Mr. Schup is Woodbadge Trained (SC-173 Eagle Patrol), and has earned the Scouters Training Award and Scouters Key. Other awards he has been recognized with are: District Award of Merit, Scoutmaster's Award of Merit, Commissioners Arrowhead Award, Longhorn Council's Distinguished Assistant Scoutmaster Award,  45-year Scouter Veterans Award, and Trailblazer District's "TB" Pin. Mr. Schup was recently honored by having a District Camporee named in his honor. He is currently a Merit Badge Counselor for the following: Backpacking; Camping; Cooking; Climbing; Personal Fitness; Radio; Safety; Rifle; Shotgun (Mr. Schup is an NRA trained, Council-Approved Instructor); Computers; Electricity; Electronics. He is still active at the District level as a member of the Training Committee, and is a member of the Longhorn Council Historic Society.

He served as Assistant Scoutmaster (ASM) for 18 years prior to becoming our Troop's Scoutmaster. While an ASM, Mr. Schup also served as a Unit Commissioner, Assistant District Commissioner, District Roundtable Commissioner, Associate Explorer Post Advisor, and Explorer Post Advisor. He has been a member of several Council-level committees, including the Advisory Committee for Scouting for the Handicapped, COPE/Climbing Committee, and Fields Sports subcommittee to the Camping Committee. Mr. Schup has been an adult Crew Advisor to three Philmont Treks.

Mr. Schup has been selected for staff for many BSA events, including: ASM for TA-135 and TA-137 Twin Arrows Junior Leader Training Courses; Field Sports Director / Rifle/Shotgun Range Safety Officer for SR2 and LSR summer camps in 1981; many District Camp-O-Rees; numerous Adult Basic Leader Training courses; Longhorn and Circle-10 (Dallas) Rifle/Shotgun Program Instructor Courses; Field Sports Specialty Camps; 1981 National Scout Jamboree - Trading Post "C"; 1985 National Scout Jamboree - K2BSA amateur radio station operator and Radio merit badge counselor; 1989 National Scout Jamboree - Trading Post "C"; 1997 National Scout Jamboree - Action Area "A" Air Rifle; 2001 National Scout Jamboree – Action Area “A” Air Rifle; 2005 National Scout Jamboree – Action Area “A” Air Rifle; 2010 National Scout Jamboree – Action Area “A” Air Rifle; 2013 National Scout Jamboree - Merit Badges (Electricity/Electronics); and an actor in the BSA film  "A Bridge Toward Faith". He is a Life Member of the National Eagle Scout Association, Life member of Alpha Phi Omega, and Life member of the Summit Becktel Reserve Staff Association. He has been awarded the Lockheed-Martin Community Service Award many times, and the President of the United States "Call to Service" Lifetime Achievement Volunteer Service Award for his dedicated involvement in Scouting.
